A hacker is a person intensely interested in the arcane and recondite workings of any computer operating system. Hackers are most often programmers. As such, hackers obtain advanced knowledge of operating systems and programming languages. They might discover holes within systems and the reasons for such holes. Hackers constantly seek further knowledge, freely share what they have discovered, and never intentionally damage data.A cracker is one who breaks into or otherwise violates the system integrity of remote machines with malicious intent. Having gained unauthorized access, crackers destroy vital data, deny legitimate users service, or cause problems for their targets. Crackers can easily be identified because their actions are malicious.

I don't believe that a cracker is bad just because they are a cracker. It's quite a wide topic. I've reverse engineered/cracked several single player games in order to create trainers, bots that automate gameplay and removed checking for disks for some older games - just because I dislike disks - for personal use. But I'm not being malicious. - How else are you gonna mod games with no modding support? As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, should they really be termed as malicious just because they crack?

Jay Matthews Indeed... The ability to be a good hacker is the same ability to rapidly learn new languages, platforms, architectures, etc with minimal references to build great solutions. I've legit hacked so many systems of clients I've developed to better understand and improve their systems. When troubleshooting other systems that integrate with our applications, it involves a degree of hacking to understand what's going on beyond the firewall. When evaluating software companies for acquisition, you can't just rely on what they say about their applications. You have to, essentially hack it to verify it. When you build secure systems, you have to think like a hacker to proactively program against it. Ultimately, the best software developers make for the best hackers and vice versa. Likewise, people who have to ask how to be a hacker are many years away from ever becoming one. Just my opinions. 😉

Dennis I would classify your actions as hacking and not cracking although Standardisation bodies like the ISO may not have standardised the definition of these terms.

I agree with Manushi and Sonic. A Hacker Is a person driven to learn all he can about computers and there systems. And real like to write code to solve problems. They share freely what they have learned with system developers and others, and never damages other peoples files. The first time I heard the term Cracker was from FBI agents I was consulting with in the later 1990s about internet security (back then they really needed help). Crackers have malicious intent and try to out do each other on the damage they can do. The first case I looked into was a kid who hacked the NSA public web site. He did no real damage wrote a wonderfull poem called “ Allice’s NTP sever. the poem was along the lines of "Allice’s restaurant". I found it in one of the news groups. He got hired by one of the three letter government after that. The Canadian cracker I next tracked down would break into company’s computer systems and when he got scared he would erase their disks to hide his attack. Doing untold damage, at the time a lot of companies were not good about keeping backup. I have no objection about tracking him down through net news group posting. The Royal Canadian Mounties explained to him the wrongness of his action. Back then Human engineering Bragging on net news groups was the way I found these Guys. The data from CERT would give you all the security data from the attacks to work from. Hackings fine see my post about being MITs first network hacker in 1971. Cracking is bad!!! avoid it!!

Here is my personal understanding of these terms: 1. A hacker is someone with the ability to reverse engineer a system and find ways to exploit its vulnerabilities. These people actually understand how software, operating systems, and networks work. 2. Crackers are wanna-be hackers and script kiddies. In some cultures, crackers are also known to be "flat, dry baked foods typically made with flour. " 😉

A hacker is a one who finds the mistakes or bugs in a program or anything like.... An hacker don't the bad for the public ... Hacker is made for the good purpose so that we can move ahead continuously ... On the other hand , Cracker is another face of a hacker BUT for his own selfishness or for the bad for MANYs .... Cracker is basically made for their own selfishness in many countries. They are like a thief or a destroyer we can say for Any PROGRAM ... /* Both Works same and has almost same powers ... Only the motto is different .... */

Cracker can be an offensive term, so be careful using it. This thread has attracted higher quality answers, but for the record, similar inquiries exist: https://www.sololearn.com/discuss/1490805/?ref=app https://www.sololearn.com/discuss/221990/?ref=app https://www.sololearn.com/discuss/1300875/?ref=app (keyword: "cracker") Please search prior to posting. Hackers should have excellent programming skills and good knowledge in all types of operating systems then only they can crash the specific network Crackers are specified for security crimes, for example to pirate the data from others device simple.. Hacker-> software Cracker->hardware

In my humble opinion, a hacker is like a curious child who has just been given a toy car and disarms it to see its inner mechanism. and a cracker is the same child trying to make his toy car besides walking can do something more "fun" ... A matter of focus ... a computer security expert has to know how to act as a cyber criminal would. And the line that separates good from evil ... is very thin ...😇😈

I forgot to mention there is also government cyber warfare. Such as stuxnet. used to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment centrifuges. It was a marvelous piece of code that was so specific it doesn't matter it's out on the Internet now it would only go after a particular controller on the centrifuges for enrichment to the uranium. here is wikipadias comments ... Stuxnet is a malicious computer worm, first uncovered in 2010. ... Stuxnet specifically targets programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which allow the automation of electromechanical processes such as those used to control machinery and industrial processes including centrifuges for separating nuclear material.
