As a programmer, you have a lot of options. Most companies, if they use software, typically have a programmer or can benefit from software that you create and license to them.

Ultimately, it just depends on what you find most interesting and what direction you want to go with programming. For myself, I've dealt with automation, business intelligence, workforce analytics, and game development. Most of them I "accidentally" got into, but my main passion revolves around the gaming industry because it allows me to express my programming in more creative ways and allows me to engage into my artist side.

If you meant to ask "What can I earn," then that also depends on the area of focus, the company and the area of work. Typically, it ranges from 60k - 150k depending upon the type of job, company, knowledge and years of experience.

All of what I mentioned holds true regardless of where you do it from. Most of my work I do remotely, so it's technically online.

If you wanted to start your own thing, you could create any software you wanted and sell it online, and the revenue simply depends upon the software/marketing and how well it sells. Owning your own company has the potential to pay you significantly more than it would to work for someone.

If you want a steady paycheck and work, I would apply for a remote / telecommute position at a business. Then you can work from home, get a constant paycheck and whatever other benefits the company provides its employees.
