Knowledge is definitely more important that a certificate, because they probably don't hire people based on their fancy papers

These "fancy papers" proves that you have formal training in something. If you want a serious job you will need one. Plus, is better be called "PhD Joe" than "hey Joe" (sadly that things have repercussions on real life society). Most people here will tell you that you don't need a degree for many reasons, the first one is because they don't have one and don't understand the importance of it. A basic rule of Physics (with exceptions): energy tends to go to the path of least resistance. But the extraordinary only come from hard work.

Certificates maybe helpful in getting you an interview with a company. In a pool of candidates with little to no experience, it will help you stand out. However, you still need to pass their battery of tests and interviews to get the job.
