Whats up with text editors?

Question

I see very strong opinions when it comes to what text editor coders go with. Having only a casual understanding of their purpose my question is why this is such a hot button issue for more seasoned coders. To me there is a disconnect in their utility versus the the polarizing fan base. I like sublime but notepad++ is just as good. If I just work in an ide, I dont feel like I am at a big disadvantage.

Is there something I am missing?

Syntax highlighting of code editors and IDEs is helpful compared to plain text editors.
