With HTML5 you can create games. But you are using it with CSS mostly to display stuff on screen. All game logic is written in JavaScript. Using some frameworks like Note.js you can write server side of the game on JavaScript too!

if you look into the HTML canvas tag there are more than enough tutorials around for creating great games.
Maybe try to recreate classics like Pong or tic take toe.
