Best programming language for each type of application?

So to clarify for myself and those after me with similar blanks in knowledge; which languages are most well-suited for any specific type of programming?

So to throw in some initial examples I have operating systems, games, web application, application development,...

Feel very welcome to broaden the list and inform me about the competing programming languages and where these languages has an edge.
