^[aeiou] vs. [^aeiou] for designating non-vowels
Could anybody please explain to me if there is any logic why the second one is used vs. the first one? I always feel the second would designate something like "not-a", "e", "i", "o", "u"...

In the first one... the string must start with any of the chars specified.
Your statement is correct for the second one.
