Must I learn JavaScript in other to understand the HTML5

No not at all. Html has its own functions in web dev and so does js.
Think of it this way, a web is a house, and html is the builder, it creates all the necessary required fragments of the web, now css comes in, does all the beauty work from coloring and many more. Js now comes as the wizard (magician), making the impossible happen, from dropdown context menus, to pop up alert boxes, canvas drawings amongst others.
The point is, for you to understand html5, its not a must to learn js, because even static webs exist without js code in them, but, for a web dev work, front end mostly, js will be required together with css.

First decide what you want to be in future. If you want to be web developer then you need to learn both.
