Python is a general purpose language, while R is specifically designed for statistics and data analysis. In terms of data science, they both have similar capabilities. You don't lose anything by choosing Python. R is mostly only used in academics, Python is preferred in business.
I tried R and personally I think its syntax is a bit obscure and weird, so it did not grow on me.
