What is the difference between <span> and <font>

What is the difference between <span> and <font >when i want to change color of the word or of the sentence. <span style=“color:red”>Thank you :)</span> <font color=“blue”>for your help</font>

The 2 tags span and font do not have the same purpose: <span> is a generic container that can be used to group elements, whereas <font> was( in the old days)more specifically designed to specify the font face, color and size for the contained text. The font tag is not meant to be used any more: to specify text formatting it is now better to use css style within the other more generic enclosing tags (span, p, div, td).
