@Vasu Grover: 'html' tag can means as well the specific <html> tag, as generic html <tag>... but the <!doctype html> isn't really a tag... Anyway, @MELBERT S VARRON answer ( why all these uppercases? ) is not right... <html> is the root tag of an html document, but what tell to the brother that's html is the server in the Http header request... while <!doctype html> or other valids DTD ( <html> isn't ) tell to the brother the version of Html to use.

The <html> tag tells the browser that this is an HTML document.
