There are sites which still run html4. Html5 is the living standard. It won't expire or become outdated that easily.

A good way to look at it is that every website uses at least some html. Even if the site uses php, javascript, or ruby, these scripts are embedded in an html file.

So html is still relevant and it will be around as long as the web is.
