Career in Coding?

Question

Has anyone transitioned into a career in coding but absolutely had no background in the field? Didn't study computer science or programming in school, no previous work experience. I currently work in a public service field but have an interest in developing apps and want to work for tech company in the future. Any advice or suggestions to someone transitioning to this field?

You'll have to show brilliance as they would want to see your work first hand. I've been developing and self teaching for years, but don't want to pursue a job for anyone else - establish my own company instead. Create a portfolio online, and network with like minded people to attract the right attention.
