why do we have to write in printf numbers like (3.2,-8.5,19.17) in formating output.

Question

In formating output more optional are being taken my qn why do write in printf section like for example
printf("Pi=%3.2f",3.14159);
printf("Pi=%8.5f",3.14159)
whats the use of those numbers(3.2,8.7)and so on
