If you want to tackle some IoT stuff, you could use some DIY boards like Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Then the choice would be Python for Raspberry or C/C++ for Arduino.

On my ee college is mostly used C/C++ and Matlab. But I also find useful Java, SQL, Verilog and Assembly.
