Purpose of using github

What is the main purpose and benifits of using github.
Because I am using it from some days and I didn't able to understand, for what it used for.

On a small scale, GitHub is still useful since it allows you to publish your projects for the world to see and perhaps learn from. Also it has some nice tools like code linters, and task runners
