How i can assign a string values to arrays elements in a loop

i want to assign any letter to any elements of string array.
for exampe:
string[] names = new string[5];
for (int k = 0; k < 6; k++)
{
string x;
Console.WriteLine("insert next letter");
x = Console.ReadLine();
names[x];
}
but this example is wrong
