Assigning css to the 'area' tag

hello everyone, i'm making a map and there are a lot of elements in it, to facilitate the client i would like to put some highlight effect the moment the 'area' was superimposed ,. But I failed miserably ... how do I resolve this. (the highlight can be anything, like a border or expansion of the part of the image with the mouse on top)
