How does a newbie to the business go from this level of knowledge to a career in software engineering?

Defining a newbie as someone with either no degree or a degree in something unrelated, with no contacts in the business. Defining level of knowledge as self-taught, from sites like this and books, in several languages (undefined, please recommend). Defining career as job programming or analyzing code to create drivers for hardware, new software (especially graphic and audio manipulation), game engines, or "something Google". I know this question has a wide scope, and I thank you for any answer.

well, nowadays, because when you want a job you give a CV and probably they first look at your level of education. I guess that is very hard to find a job where they ask what you know, without having written proof of some sort. you should try and look at small firms with entry level jobs
