¿How to implement data sockets?

Question

As far as i know, data sockets are used to be able to update clients webpage from server, so they always see updated data.. is this correct? i need something like that for iot sensor.

sockets can be use in any data transfer not only in different computers, it can be use also to transfer data between two programs running in the same computer
