Why HTTPS considered Safe?

I am wondering why it is and also why many sites where its not require are using such as blogs. There no one do transaction related to money.

HTTPS -
Hypertext transfer protocol secure. It is basiclly same thing as http, but it is encoding the messages which are going to or from server. Because of strongly encoded messages it is considered safe

When i register a SSL for https i am inputing my identity. from that, i think the https is containing owner data so it be consedered safe..
