Many people know about American universities but I guess awareness of quality continetal European institutions is low especially amongst outsiders probably due to the language barrier. So thanks for enlightening the rest of the world about KIT and similar universities.

This is much down to personal preference. Among free and globally available MOOC options I started with Harvard CS50 that has great user friendly and easy to understand approach created by a team lead by prof David Malan.
