How to add new content to a string array?

Question

I got to a stall while developing a studying exercise,
I declared an array of type char and left it blank.
The ideia was to assign a string using multiple if scenarios and print the result only at the very end.
It did not work for all my workarrounds and I had to modify the code in order to make it work, but it is not the way it was proposed to do.
