They identify experimental features* like: Do you want to try our test website? Prefixes are supposed to disappear when testing reveals an experiment's ready for everyone.

Unfortunately, developers have been deploying test features *for real*. This is an abuse of the test/production paradigm. Therefore, vendor prefixes may be going away, to be replaced by browser flags, e.g.:

chrome://flags
"Careful, these experiments may bite"
