<head> tags

Hi all, I’m on the second HTML lesson on here and they just showed the <head> tags, but they haven’t been mentioned before. So my questions are: - what are they for/what do they mean - are they necessary when they contain nothing between the container tags (as shown in the second HTML lesson on here) Thanks for you help
