What is subscripted and superscripted formatted text? And when to use it?

Superscript text appears half a character above the baseline, while subscript appears half a character below the baseline. You can use <sup> to define superscript like this example: <p>This text contains<sup>superscript</sup>text.</p> and you can use <sub> to define subscript like this example: <p>This text contains<sub>subscript</sub>text.</p> Mostly, they are widely used in mathematics expressions or some formula.

Superscript and subscript refer to numbers that are positioned slightly higher or slightly lower than the text on the line. For example, a footnote or endnote number reference is an example of superscript, and a scientific formula might use subscript text.

superscript means "up" subscript means "down" you can understand properly with this examples: sup™ :- TM is superscript sub¡ :- i is subscript.
