How to change links like index.php/?id=1234 to index.php/1234 or index/1234

please guys, I need to know how to turn my GET links to something like index.php/1234 or index/1234 instead of index.php/?id=1234 . Any contribution will be valuable. moreover which host is the best....

you need mod_rewrite enabled in apache. then you can use rewrite rules in your .htaccess file. search on Google for that, there are some handy generators for that file on the internet.
