What can I improve on the design?

Question

I made a bet with my classmate that I could design a better design than my school. I had 1 hour on me. I finished with this result below. But I want to add a notification icon up in the right corner and some news and projects that need to be turned in soon at the bottom.

Is there something else you think I could improve? My goal was to show how bad their website was. They used like 10 images just for the shading on the navigation :O

(Assuming your code is below) Use Font awesome, a dark theme would look better but you have to redesign the styles.

Yeah, i avoided pure black and pure white because of eye strain but i will probably need to redesign some things later on and that's why I'm seeking feedback and i will also use tools later on which let me see where the users get stuck or don't know what to do.

Yeah that might look better. Thanks for pointing it out. I am currently using font awesome, it's really great :). I didn't include the code as it isn't mobile responsive and the desktop version has a little bug on some scales.
