How much you make depends on a lot of things. If you become really good and make beautiful and functional websites, you can make pretty good money compared to most jobs. But if you do small projects, you'll make less. It is a good career if you really build your skills.

The challenge is that most small businesses can use free website builders. It is hard to compete with that. Big companies hire their own full time programmers. Those are the ones that make the most money as it is a full time job. There are companies too big for the free sites, but not big enough to have full time developers and they hire contractors. That market is narrow and highly competitive. But you can make decent money there. The hard part is finding new clients all the time. To be successful at that level, ALWAYS get them on a maintenance agreement so you can keep the money coming in month after month.

I've seen developers in some countries working for far less than $10/hr. While in other countries developers might charge $85 hour or more. There are a lot of factors affecting how much you can make.
