The two main environments for developing games are unreal and unity. unreal engine for mid size team creation of games. unreal requires more technical knowledge to produce software. unity engine for small teams usually Indie. a faster and simpler approach to game creation. Usually with graphically weaker presentation in games. The game also needs to use non intensive algorithms to make the game as the engine doesn't cope. This usually isn't a problem for Indie developers as they are usually making smaller games for smaller profits. Both can be experimented with for free when not making profits. They will require purchase of a license if you decide to make games for profit. Here is the links to the websites. Yes. But, there are better environments for game making than java. If you are interested in game development check out, unity.
