I want to edit the OS of my phone so I can make my own. I am currently using Android 6.0.

Android is an OS, not flappy bird game. Whole Team Of Android experts struggle for months to make a new version FROM AN EXISTING ONE. But if you learn about its architecture, "you definitely can". After all, Humans like us created it, and its no rocket science, but its not easy either.......

u can't edit but use custom o's for your phone e.g - cynagon mod. *only for rooted phones*

at fast you download your letest version flash file then you flash your phone with flash tool etc
