Python or R. Since majority of tasks in data science business is tackling numerous problems of varied scope and character, you have to have an agile, universal tool that you can change shape of, fast. So that you can work and tinker on your data model - let's say a universal weather forecaster. Java is used when you have a ready model that you want to compile and run as a ready, but closed, application. A one that takes a formatted input (place, time), processes it and hands out the output (a 2-day weather forecast for London). EDIT: I mentioned Java, because the original question asked for which is better Python or Java.

The most popular language for data science is C#. most (if not all) data science is done via a DB server. with MS SQL Server partnering with R, a lot more can now be achieved. C# being on the best languages to go with MS SQL Server will make life much easier.....more details https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/advanced-analytics/r/getting-started-with-sql-server-r-services
