Which is the best operating system for a full time developer and why?

linux is good but it sucks when you got some serious driver problem.

Windows is most used because free update , upgrades and for gaming.

If you want to develop for Mac, MacOS is unavoidable...
If you want to develop Windows app', you will have difficulties to avoid installing it at least in a virtual environnment :P

Anyway, Mac is expensive, Microsoft is bugged, not efficient and more to more freedom privateur ( with same model as android )... well so, my preference goes to GNU/Linux systems :P
