As a brand new programer looking to be a software engineer, where should I start?

I want to start my education off with the basics and move my way up. Would love insight and resources to help me out.

it is worth going to uni if the uni is good (and if you are ready to make the most of it). it is not just about learning the technique, but also meeting peers and get exposure to new ideas from research.

it depends on your country i suppose... look at job offers and see what the companies require.

in my part of the world it is still possible to get an entry level job as a coder or tester without a degree, but much harder. and you will need to keep study and get a degree equivalent later, to progress in your career. which is not easy to do on top of the day job.

Do you have opportunities to join a uni for an engineering degree?

I do but would the cost of tuition be justified in the industry at this time? Or would becoming certified for 1/10 of the cost and working my way up be a more reasonable approach?
