i is just the name of the variable that holds the current value. You can change it to what ever you like.

Yes there are cases where it is confusing and where you would really have to guess.

yes, i, python and loops. could be the variable for the iterator. could be a typo...
the linked posts tell you how to write good questions.
I don't like guessing what someone means by looking at the tags and asking my crystal ball. the community guidelines are there for a reason. others won't know what he means without a sample code snippet or further explanation.

I was always under the impression that i was shorthand for index. For example, when looping through an array we can use i to access the item at the ith index.
