x+12=3(x-4)==2x=24==x=12

Y+12=3(Y-4)
Y+12=3Y-12
2Y=24
Y=12

let present age be x
age after 12 years = x+12
age before 4 years = x-4
hence
x+12 = 3(x-4)
x+12 = 3x - 12
12+12= 3x - x
2x= 24
x= 12
