What does x86 actually mean?

x86 refers to a series of processors that shared a common instruction set. I think it was Intel.... but don't write me on that. Any way, those chips were the core of the various PCs for decades (386, 486, etc). x86 became a short hand for those, to differentiate them from the cold that Apple used in that time frame.
