Community edition of Intellij IDEA is free and its more than enough for a begginer.

The best tool for java developing is using intellij IDE, it gives the best programming options and lets you program the best way. Another nice tool for code detection is checkmarx program which detects error within the code and it helps me a lot. those 2 combined gives the best program experience.
