Which is better java or kotlin ?

I am getting into android developement but recently in google I/O google announced that it will make kotlin its first class language for android. What do you guys think?

You should know Java. Most of the software is still written in Java, so you need to be able to read it at least. What you write though is your choice, and yes Kotlin is shorter.

Well, since it's between Java and Kotlin, I'll advice kotlin. Would have adviced React Native script for Android development. PS: I'm not a mobile developer yet. I use JS and TS, hence, the advice on React Native.

Kotlin supports java it can read java bytecode it can also morph java code to kotlin code best of both worlds
