I think Java is essential to begin with. The main reason for this is because Kotlin is relatively new, and the support and help for Kotlin is small at the moment. This is pretty critical if you are new to making apps, and if you're getting stuck. If you program in java, it will be way easier to find a good sollution. Another factor than leans towards Java is that kotlin is almost the same, meaning that if you know java, kotlin is easier to understand. The good thing about kotlin is that it makes the same things happen with fewer lines of code and it is easy to read. Here is the good part: you don't have to choose! Java and kotlin can work together, and the compiler understands them both! This can be good practise, as you might want to experiment with kotlin, while at the same time program in java. If you are new to Java, I don't recommend you do the course on sololearn, as is isn't reallly related to android programming. I recommend you get yourself a nice cup of some hot bevarage and watch a ton of youtube tutorials! Good luck!
