What advice would you give someone just starting to learn programming?

I just started my technical program for Computer programming and web development. it's all kindof intimidating there are so many languages and programs to learn. Im looking for some advice about career options or specific areas to focus on.

My advice for a starter is always Python. Python has a easy syntax and is very grateful to learn. With Python you dont have to think about his syntax so much and you can focus on the programming logic. The other side of the easy-syntax-thing is that you have more will to learn because of his simplicity. Python is also a very powerful and useful language. You have lot of web frameworks for backend web development. You can easily write scripts for your system and for everyday use. You can even develop some games with Python or other GUI stuff...
