directory comes from telephone directory.

Unix was invented at Bell labs. It was an arm of at&t which earned most of it's keep through telephones and communications.

A directory holds pointers to many addresses along with phone numbers.

Similarly on computers, directories point to files and other directories. Unix treats directories just as it does files.

Time has zoomed, the name is still around.

You will see many similar examples. I encourage you to look up why core dump, bug, patch, testing, and more terms are called that. Computers have developed at lightning pace leaving English miles and miles behind.
