Another advice: Micro SD (with an adapter) or (recommended) USB, install a Distro and make your SD/USB/Other... persistent.
You will have a full OS in a single USB and without change nothing to your main Hard Disk (HD).
โข Install Universal USB Installer, super easy to use - https://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
โข After do that, modify boot order, it can depends on your device, here a reference - https://www.lifewire.com/change-the-boot-order-in-bios-2624528
I have Zorin OS on my USB and it works pretty fine, i recommend an USB if you want to try Linux without change nothing to your HD or if you have no enough RAM to work with virtualization (still the easiest and best way).

There is no << best OS for programming >>: it mosrly depend first of the targeted OS platform you want for executing your programs, and secondary depends of your own tastes ^^

Have you considerate the possibility of dual-boot? or even vurtualization? Programming is often cross-platform, and debug time will require testing code on different configurations ;)

... or liveCDs: it's not possible to make them persistent as CDrom are read only media, and will load less quickly than liveUSBs, but could be very helpful for search/test/find the distro' of your tastes ;)
edit:
Not all distro's can be made persistent (but mostly of Ubuntu flavours/derivates), as all distro's doesn't provide live versions (but almost of Debian derivated ones, say almost of linux distro's)

And anyway, it's a shame to give yourself the best answer mark to your thanks, while real answers have been given :P
(at least, if you're considerated that there's no best answer, don't mark any...)
