XML is a markup language to store data hierarchically. HTML is a markup language to make web pages.

they are both markup languages however the xml syntax is stricter compared to html. for instance, all elements need to have opening and closing tags in xml for your pages to be displayed.

XML is designed to create store and transport data, HTML is much like a display markup language, Extensible markup language (XML) is used to markup text, became a Recommendation of the w3c in 1998, is self descriptive, that is to say it does not have predefined syntax like <p> as in the case of XHTML/HTML, used at the start of the internet. it was acting like a markup language, a database and a server/client language and as such the word 'Extensible'
