It's Platform Independence, and extreme popularity. it's an old, heavily worked on high level language that has a garbage collector. Strong for any back-end development.

java can run on any device through the java runtime environment and only has to have one code to display on many different sized or type devices...it is platform independent....that's why you hear that java is in everything from your alarm clock to your car computers to bank systems etc
