When did you start building games independent of tutorials?
I've started watching tutorials on the subject of creating games with Unity. I still don't think I can make games independent of these tutorials, and would probably have to watch them again to create something. Althogh, it's my first tutorial, so I understand that is normal. I wanted to know when you - more experienced developers - began to understand what you're doing, and could make games without the help of a needed reference.

I had problems with Unity because I can't seem to remember the C# syntax that much since I started learning it on SL only recently. But I am used to C++ so UE was much more easy to pick up for me.
Right now Im doing both - modding an open source engine such as Id Tech, as well as building my own renderer from the ground up. You learn a lot more by doing this.

tbh i've learned the basics of Unreal Engine in a week or less, and then i started to create games with a little help from the community. btw i learned the basic in so short time because i had programming history which helped me alot with the blueprints.
