Anyone know how to become a programmer by not going to uni? Can u do a certified course in java for example, and build portfolio

I am looking to do an intensive course in java and other languages that will prepare me for applications. I have seen courses online from companies such as Firehouse and was wondering if by having a certificate in java and other languages (so self taught really) would equip me well for applying for jobs. Obviously I'd have to create a portfolio of works etc but would I be at a disadvantage by not going to uni to study it?
