The first languages I get to learn was BASIC & Pascal, both were Borland's, never learned Fortran, to tell the truth, I had to struggle later on trying to embrace new languages adopting C code style, like Java, JavaScript, C++, C#, PHP, ActionScript etc. I suppose it's because the languages I learned initially was far from as discipline or structured as the ones derived from C, and yes, they were easier to learn. If I may, I would suggest you to begin with C++, I'm not suggesting you this because it's easy or best, I'm suggesting this so you can have a strong foundation, forged by disciplinary. Later on you can choose any language you're comfortable with, the one that fits your need and purpose, and suits your coding style too, after all, these days new language evolves rapidly, you'd have more than plenty to choose.
