Try this:
1) Learn the basics of a language. More importantly, REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO SMALL DETAILS WHILE YOU'RE LEARNING. Don't speed through the learning process. Don't multitask something else with it. Make it your only focus for that time.
2) Practice what you've learned. Brainstorm real-world problems that can be solved using what you've learned. Find free exercises on the web and do them for maybe an hour a day.
3) Think about how you could simplify your code. Is the code confusing to understand? What does line x do, and is it necessary for the problem at hand? Things like that. Talk to other coders.

Programming is about finding the right tools for the job. With discipline, you can train yourself to figure out what those tools should be for any given problem.
