To be compulsory education.

In japan, programming is planned to be compulsory education in 2020. How about in your country? Do you think that is good thing?

Glad to hear that! I'm a Malaysian and unfortunately the adoption of programming in our education system is quite slow.

Most of us only get to learn C/Java/HTML for the first time in college study around 18 years old.

Yes, of course that is a good thing! Programming can help teach students many life skills, like Problem Solving and learning where they fail so they can improve.
In Singapore, some of our schools offer the chance to learn Programming, from simple Python to eventually programming complex Artificial Intelligence through languages like Java and C++. Through this, and Sololearn, I have learnt many skills I never would have learnt otherwise. I have also discovered the joy of Programming! Hence, I believe programming is something that should be learnt by all.

I don't think programming classes should be compulsory for anybody. Sure, it teaches you how to think, but that logic can be applied to any class nowadays.

The purpose of my high school is to prepare you for higher education. Classes like math, basic science and english are required in my high school because they're more or less basic education, and necessary for basically all college degrees. Classes like child development, wood shop, and yes, programming are optional because, if I'm being honest, not everyone is going to use those skills in higher education.

Not everyone is looking to take on jobs in those fields.They're not seen as necessary to getting a basic American education.

Making those classes compulsory might spark interest in some people, but it would leave way more irritated that they were forced to do even more work they didn't want to do. For example, if I was forced to take woods shop (which I absolutely hate) I would be mad. I have friends who absolutely despise the AP CS class I'm in, but it's okay because we as humans have preferences.

If we're going to require programming because it's potentially useful, we have to require every other elective for the same reason. There isn't enough time in 4 years to require every single elective.

Tl;dr: Not everyone needs to take programming for their college, life or job.

Programming a Compulsary Education in INDIA

Well, A good thing if you look at it in a straight forward manner BUT, Let us dig in deep..

We need to know When is it a Compulsary Subject? High School? College? Maybe Junior School?

If it is TILL High School 1st Year (Or Class 10 in India), It is fine, No problems, No worries.

However, After that the student need to focus on a specific subject or their self interest, this meaning anything anything Compulsary, that won't be the quite right thing to do because it is not everyone's cup of tea.

P.S. :. I personally don't know about High School and Junior School system In Japan, This answer uses info I got from watching anime.

Who said everybody is having a taste for computing and programming?

So long as someone doesn't have passion for something, making that thing compulsory becomes a poison unto them. I agree that programming should be introduced into schools as early as Primary school but never should it be made compulsory.

I long for education system where students will learn that which they have passion for.

For those who say programming gives a better problem solving skill who said that is guaranteed? Was it not said that Mathematics helped developing problem solving skills and critical thinking?

But Mathematics is compulsory but only few, less than 5% are responsible for solving the problems the world faces today.

I come from Kenya-Africa, I came to learn of programming at University. If only I came to know of coding at lower primary, I would be better off. But making it compulsory doesn't solve the problem.

It is very good change, as programming in today world🌏 is so important .
Even we are surrounded by numerous thing's which are gifted by programming.
In India, programming is optional after 10th. And many students are not interested so much as compare to traditional subjects. Also less awareness related to programming .
We should try to give equal importance to programming and raise the interest among students, by telling it's amazing world 😄

In Latvia (differs from school to school ofc) it is either not teached or teached in last 2-3 High school classes, but that's mostly in the better schools. I think it is a good thing, but probably should be teached even earlier. Through programming people learn to think systematically and logically, which can improve your learning process of all other subjects and beyond.

I don't disagree that everyone learning some coding would be a good thing, but to make it compulsory? What if the student wants nothing to do with coding?

good to know that in your country the programing is a compulsory for education it's really important to give knowledge about things which is trending in future and can have ability to make future by learning that in small age give some more time to grasp the knowledge and make their future
If in India too make compulsory to learn programming in small classes then it would be great move towards to make batter the education system

Every Country should opt programing as a compulsory subject​ as “Programming​ teach us how to Think and Solve problems in many different ways”
Great step taken forward from Japan!!
I think this should influence other Countries to bring programming as an Major Subject!
